Demise of Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairman Med S. K. Kaggwa
We at the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) in Banjul, The Gambia are deeply saddened by the news of the passing away of our colleague Med Kaggwa.
Mr. Med Kaggwa was a qualified Lawyer and also the Chairperson of Uganda Human Rights Commission, Former Commissioner and Special Rapporteur on Prisons and Conditions of Detention of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and a Commissioner of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission.
He was a skilled and conscientious legal practitioner with nearly 30 years in the promotion of constitutionalism, good governance, rule of law and respect for human rights.
He has also been a Member of Parliament in both the national and sub-regional Parliaments, a Member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the current 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and a Commissioner of the Uganda Constitutional Commission. Additionally, he has been Head of Department of Law at the Law Development Centre and held a Political Office as Minister in Charge of Political Affairs in the Office of the President.
