Gambia’s Economy Is Sinking – Halifa Sallah

The Secretary General of People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), described the Gambia’s economy as sinking.

The renowned National Assembly member for Serrekunda Central made this observation at the party’s congress, held in Ngayen Sanjal village, in the North Bank Region from Friday, 28th  to Sunday 30th  December 2018.

Halifa Sallah added that the budget of the country has exceeded 25 billion, whereas only 11 billion is what could be gained from tax and 13.5 billion must come from external support.

The Serrekunda Central NAM further disclosed that in 2016, import accounts for 16 billion and export stands at 814 million with trade deficit of over 12 billion.

He added that in 2017, The Gambia’s import was 25 billion and export was 613 million and our re-export was 403 million, experiencing a deficit of 24.4 billion.

Sallah recalled that PDOIS told people that, the economy of the country is sinking and such is the rationale behind debt of the country is now over 56 billion.

“Unless and until our governments invest in the productive base of the economy, our economy will continue to sink,” he cautioned.

The Secretary General of the socialist party in The Gambia challenged the government to invest in the productive base of the economy, provided they truly meant what they called “economic reform”. 

As a strong believer in Gambia taking charge of her own destiny, Sallah said we must be innovative and we cannot continue to be imitators.
