Imam Bakawsu Fofana calls for eradication of poverty and hunger through farming
Bakawsu Fofanna, a renowned controversial Gambian Islamic scholar and cleric, has called on Gambians to maintain peace in the country.
He further urged Gambians to go back to the land in order to eradicate poverty.
Fofana made these remarks at his sermon on Friday, November 4. 2022 at the State House Mosque in Banjul.
“What can people do about the reduction of the price of basic commodities such as food? I am calling on women of The Gambia to fence their homes where there are taps and empty space and plant vegetables for cooking. That is how to reduce the prices of basic commodities in the county,” he advised.
According to him, if one spends two hundred Dalasis (D200) a day, engaging in small scale gardening at home can save one hundred Dalasis (D100).
He said for Africa to eradicate hunger and poverty, everybody must be ready to work.
“We should all ready to work if Africa wants to eradicate hunger and poverty as quarrelling is not the solution,” he stated.
He said Africa’s biggest problem has been hunger, noting that leaders should strive to ensure that poverty is eradicated.
He recalled the days when putting food on the table was easier with less dependency, adding that Gambians should be mindful of some of the imported chickens in the country.
He said some of these chickens that are consumed in the country are left uncheck and the consumers know nothing about them – how they were slaughtered and the period they have been kept?
Irregular migration
He explained that the reason behind the youths venturing into the irregular migration known as ‘back way’ in search of greener pastures is due to hunger and poverty. Stressing that farming is the only way to end poverty.
“The reason the sons of Africa are going out of their countries is because of hunger, fire and water cannot stay in the same place. It is because of hunger and poverty and the only solution is to go back to the farm,” he concluded.
