PPP Elects Papa Njie As New Leader

Papa Njie has been elected as secretary general and leader of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in their just concluded congress held at YMCA at MDI Road in Kanifing.

The PPP had been banned by the junta led Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) of former president Yahya Jammeh following the overthrow of their government in 1994.  

The congress brought together hundreds of party members, supporters and sympathizers across the country.

Papa Njie former mayoral aspirant for the Kanifing Municipality, contested against Bakary Bunja Darboe commonly known as B.B Darboe, ex-vice president under Dawda Kairaba Jawara for the post of secretary general and party leader.

The election was conducted by the Independent Electoral Electoral Commission (IEC).

Njie secured 272 votes leaving his opponent, B.B. with 227 votes.

In his victory speech, Papa Njie commended founding fathers of the party for their efforts and commitment to the party and the country at large.

He also commended his opponent Mr. Bakary Bunja Darboe for mentoring him in the political arena, saying he learnt from the veteran politician.

“I will continue to learn from you (Mr. Darboe), because before the election you told me that you want transparent election between us and that had happened,” Papa said.

He promised to continue from the development programs left by elders of the party.

However, B.B. Darboe congratulated Mr Njie as the newly elected leader of the party for his victory, whishing him best of lucks in his political career.

“I am satisfied with the election conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission. I accepted the result with good faith,” Darboe stated.
