The Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations has expressed concern over the violence between Operation 3 Years Jotna on Sunday.

Below is the full version of the release from the center.

Regarding the violence that occurred during the 3 Years Jotna Protest

The Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations is gravely concerned about the violence that occurred in The Gambia on the 26th day of January 2020, between “Operation 3 Years Jotna” protesters and security forces.

It has come to our attention that several protesters and journalists were arrested and detained, two radio stations namely king FM in Tallinding and Home Digital FM in Brikama are also shut down. Thus, considering current events, we urge the government to maintain the appropriate human rights standards when dealing with those arrested and detained.

While we recognize the efforts that are being made by the government in trying to build a democratic Gambia, one which is free of Human Rights violations and where the rights of all persons are respected and protected,  we urge the government to continue making the necessary reforms to ensure that the atrocities that occurred in the Jammeh Regime do not happen again

We further urge the government of the Gambia to reconsider opening the two radio stations, namely, King FM and Digital FM which have been shut down. We also urge the government of The Gambia to respect its local and international human rights obligations.

The Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds, and will continue to work with relevant partners to facilitate justice for victims, through national, regional and international mechanisms to ensure that we live in a Gambia that is democratic, and which is respectful and protective of the Human Rights of all persons.
