Marr Nyang, the executive director of Gambia Participates (GP) a civil society group in the country has urged that the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure and Gamtel not to shut down internet tomorrow during the voting.

He added that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) should avoid errors in announcing the election results, adding that citizens should also accept the verdict of Gambians if their candidate loss the election.

Nyang made this statement in their recommendation on pre-election observation reports between November 9 – 30, 2021.

He said that the shutting down of internet gateway on election day is to curtail the rights of citizens, adding that citizens have right to access information.

“Access to the internet and the rights to communicate is a human right,” he said.

In 2016, the Gambia was cut from the rest of the world when the internet gateway was shut down in the eve of 2016 presidential election.

The shutdown was done shortly before the country goes to the poll on December 1, 2016.
