The family and friends of the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng on Saturday launched the “Sandeng Home Project” worth over D1.8 million for the completion of the home of the Sandeng family.

Ebrima Solo Sandeng was arrested on April14, 2016, detained and tortured to death while in state custody for his role in a peaceful protest demanding for proper electoral reforms in The Gambia during the dictatorial regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.

Mr. Sandeng was also the national organizing secretary for the United Democratic Party (UDP) until the time of his victimization.

Speaking at the launching ceremony held in Brufut, Kombo Noorth, west Coast Region, Muhammeh Sandeng, the son to the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng said the launching of the ‘Solo Sandeng Home Project’ is important as it will give hopes to the family of nine people, among them who are school going children below the age of 20.

“This makes it a very important endeavor not only for a befitting tribute to our late father in the person of the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng. This shows the generosity of Gambians to their fellow Gambian,” he stated.

He lauded the Gambians diaspora in initiating the go-fund-me online to help support in raising money toward the completion their late father’s dream home.

He calls on Gambians to put whatsoever amount they could, adding that the amount of fund they received wouldn’t be sufficient enough to complete the building.

Nyima Sonko, wife to the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng described the launching ceremony as an event mixed feeling.

“It is true that we were saddened, but feeling very happy and relieved today. I am very happy to see Gambians putting in their monies to support the family of the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng to have a place to live,” she remarked.

She hailed all and sundry and their support to the Sandeng family.

She added: “Since the demised of Solo Sandeng up till now we are living in a rented house. The rental fee is to be expired in the next two months. We were very worried, but thanks to God now we are receiving help from concern Gambians and supporters of the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng,” she explained.

In his part, Dr. Malangnding Jaiteh, a representative from the diaspora described the event as a global effort.

“Most of us are breathing the fresh airs of liberty we had today through efforts of the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng together with many others who lost their lives to give up not only their lives but their families so that we can enjoy the little freedom we have today,” he noted.
