Journalists have taken to their social media platforms to celebrate a ‘successive’ one-year annivery of the current leadership of The Gambia Press Union.

The union’s leadership led by Muhammed S. Bah came in power last year in a tightly contested congress of journalists after he emerged victorious against his closed contender Omar Wally.

Mr Bah succeeded prominent Gambian journalist, Sheriff Bojang Jnr, who opted not to seek second term in office.

It is widely believed that the current GPU president‘s social acumen won him last year’s congress, as he is praised for being a people’s person.

However, Bah and executive is enjoying praise for bringing forth some successive developments including ensuring a fully functional Secretariat, increase in the union’s membership, more training for journalists on Safety and Ethical Journalist.

Members acknowledged additional support for GPU affiliates, building new partnerships and strengthening the relations between the Union and existing partners, vibrant MAJaC and many others.

Yankuba Jallow of Foroyaa highlighted that there has been more support to the media council, working towards the implementation of the ATI Law, signings of the collective bargaining to address the welfare of journalists.

Meanwhile, Jankeh Touray, reporter one of the celebrating journalists hoping for more successful years for the GPU extended message of gratitude to Muhammed S. Bah and his executive.

Ousman A Marong, manager of Nuimi FM radio said: “I want to seize this opportunity to thank the GPU President Muhammed S. Bah for scoring this milestone achievement and lifting The Gambia Press Union (GPU), to another level.”

“You may agree with me that we have different types of leaders ranging from servant leadership, transformational leadership, visionary leadership, etc.  just to name a few. Among all these types of leadership, I must say any leadership that has no vision is no leadership.

Any leadership that cannot transform is no leadership. Any leadership that cannot bring up a successor is no leadership. A leader must be a leader and the job of a leader is to lead so Muhammed S Bah led us in all aspects of the form.”

Mr Marong on the other hand advised the union’s leadership to be resolute and refuse to be used by fewer people – either the executive members or friends.”

“Hearty congratulations Mr President. May Allah guide you through your tenure in office,” Kumba Leigh also a journalist said.

The elated Muhammed S. Bah also took to his social media account to thank celebrating journalists.

He said: “Thank you, comrades for the congratulatory messages. These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without your trust and support. We were able to register these successes because of our collective trust and commitment. I have noted all your advices and I am sure we will adhere to it. I once again wish to thank you all for your trust and support. Together we can achieve our desired objective.”
