Modou MC Cham Junior, national youth president for Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) party has renewed call on President Adama Barrow to honour 3 Years Jotna movement’s petition and resigns before January 19.

“President Barrow needs to honour the petition and resign so that election can be held in March 2020. There should be election so that anyone who wins ill become president of The Gambia, he told The Monitor  in an exclusive interview on Wednesday at his Ebo Town residence.

The GDC youth representative who took part in the demonstration said he did not participate in the protest on behalf of his party but as a concern citizen, adding that every person has the right to protest.

On Monday the 3 Years Jotna movement accompanied by thousands of Gambians took to the streets demanding President Barrow’s resignation to honour the 2016 coalition’s three years agreement.

The movement delivered a petition to President Adama Barrow through the government spokesperson, Ebrima Sankareh calling on him to resign.

However,  MC Cham who had been calling on President Barrow to honour the coalition three years agreement by resigning after serving three years said when Mr. Barrow resigns peacefully he will have good legacy both nationally and internationally.

He described the 3 Years Jotna members as genuine Gambians who are reminding the president of his promise to leave office after serving the coalition’s three years agreement.

“This coalition is not about political parties but about Gambia. In 2016 they designed a Memorandum of Understanding and a manifesto was presented it to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). They sold their manifesto to Gambians with the promise that they will only rule for three years,” he said.

Making reference to Monday protest the young vocal politician said since 1965 Gambians never demand any president to resign after serving three years, adding that President Barrow is asked to resign because he agreed with Gambians that he will relinquish power after three years.

According to Cham, the constitution that mandated the president to serve for five years is the same constitution that says the president can resign too.

“When the coalition was working on their manifesto they knew that a president serves for five in this years in this country but they agreed to go for three years as an option,” he added.

He stated that had President Barrow said he will go for five years in 2016, there would have not been a coalition rather than selecting him as a standard bearer, he argued.

He described President Barrow’s decision to cling onto power until 2021 as a breach of trust and betrayal to the Gambian people.

MC further saif had President Barrow insisted on going for five years, automatically the coalition would have not been formed and in that case it is either former President Yahya Jammeh or Hon. Mamma Kandeh of GDC would have won the election.
